Democratie en onderwijs/Democratie and Education
… embody an endeavor to detect and state the ideas implied in a democratic society and to apply these ideas to the problems of the enterprise of eduction (John Dewey, Preface Democracy and Education, 1916)
In 2023 ben ik begonnen met een recensieblog over boeken die over democratie en onderwijs gaan. Dit blog zal de komende maanden vorm krijgen. Daarbij neem ik mij voor om regelmatig iets te schrijven over boeken die dan wel over democratie dan wel over onderwijs gaan. Het werk van John Dewey, Lawrence Cremin en Diana Ravitch hou ik daarbij in het achterhoofd.John Dewey omdat hij groei en bloei koppelt aan wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen en de wijze waarop het onderwijs die ontwikkelingen serieus neemt. Lawrence Cremin was leerling en sterk beïnvloed door John Dewey. Hij had oog voor de sociaal historische wortels van het openbaar onderwijs en keek heel breed tegen onderwijs aan. Hij had ook oog voor andere instituten waardoor mensen onderwezen werden (jeugdgroepen, bibliotheken en kranten bv). Diana Ravitch staat weer in de voetsporen van deze twee giganten. Eerst als rustige onderwijshistorica en steeds meer als activistische verdediger van het openbare onderwijs als belangrijke voorwaarde van een goed functionerende democratie.

In 2023, I started a review blog about books dealing with democracy and education. This blog will take shape in the coming months. In doing so, I resolve to regularly write something about books that are either about democracy or education. I will keep the work of John Dewey, Lawrence Cremin and Diana Ravitch in mind.John Dewey because he links growth and flourishing to scientific and social developments and the way education takes those developments seriously. Lawrence Cremin was a student and strongly influenced by John Dewey. He had an eye for the social historical roots of public education and took a very broad view of education. He also had an eye for other institutions through which people were taught (youth groups, libraries and newspapers e.g.). Diana Ravitch again stands in the footsteps of these two giants. First as a quiet historian of education and increasingly as an activist defender of public education as an important condition of a functioning democracy.

Terugschrijven/ Writing Back
… voor mij was het een manier om me de afgelopen jaren met die wereld en mezelf om te gaan, nog steeds bewust van het feit dat we op onszelf zijn aangewezen, onszelf moeten definiëren en daarbij een aantal waarden voor ogen hebben te houden (Harrie Jonkman, Inleiding Tijdschrijven).
In de periode 2016-2021 schreef ik een blog over boeken onder de titel Terugschrijven. Het resultaat is hier te vinden.
